چکیده

This paper discusses the occurrence of skill-enhancing technology import, namely the relationship between imports of embodied technology and widening skill-based employment di¤erentials in low and middle-income countries. GMM techniques are applied to an original panel dataset comprising 28 manufacturing sectors for 23 countries over a decade. Econometric results provide robust evidence of the determinants of widening employment di¤erentials in low and middle-income countries. In particular, the proposed empirical evidence indicates capital-skill complementarity as a possible source of skill-bias, while imported skillenhancing technology emerges as an additional driver of increasing demand for the skilled workers in these countries. — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — – Keywords: Skill Biased Technological Change, Capital Skill Complementarity, GMM estimation, General Industrial Statistics, World Trade Analyzer. Trade and the Skill Premium in Developing Countries: The Role of Intermediate Goods and Some Evidence from Peru

The rise in income inequality in developing countries after trade liberalization has been a puzzle for trade theory, which predicts the opposite effect. The authors present a model with imported intermediate goods in which the relative wages of skilled labor can rise due to higher imports of inputs or due to skill-biased technological change. The evidence from Peru in the post-liberalization ph...

Skill-Biased Technological Change and Skill-Enhancing Trade in Turkey: Evidence from Longitudinal Microdata

Skill-Biased Technological Change and Skill-Enhancing Trade in Turkey: Evidence from Longitudinal Microdata This paper explores the causes of skill-based employment differentials within the Turkish manufacturing sector over the period 1980-2001. Turkey is taken as an example of a developing economy that, in that period, had been technologically advancing and becoming increasingly integrated wit...

Skill-Biased Technology Transfer EVIDENCE FACTOR BIASED TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

This paper investigates the skill-bias of technological change in developing countries using a global sample of manufacturing industries. We report a striking increase in demand for skilled workers in the 1980s in middle income countries (GDP/capita between $2000 and $10,000). This increase is mostly due to skill-upgrading within industries rather than a reallocation of employment from low to h...

Relative Wages, Openness and Skill- Biased Technological Change in Ghana

Standard neo-classical trade theory predicts that trade liberalisation should cause a fall in wage inequality in developing countries through a decrease in the relative demand for skilled labour. Recent studies of a number of developing countries, however, find evidence to the contrary. Using a panel of manufacturing firms in the 1990s we investigate whether skill-biased technological change in...

Globalisation, Technology and the Labour Market: A microeconometric analysis for Turkey°

This paper studies the interlinked relationship between globalisation and technological upgrading in affecting employment and wages of skilled and unskilled workers in a middle income developing country. It exploits a unique longitudinal firm‐level database that covers all manufacturing firms in Turkey over the 1992‐2001 period. Turkey is taken as an example of a developing economy that, in tha...
